There are a few caves in New Zealand and Australia where the ceiling dazzles like a starry night. People pay good money to travel these caves to witness this beauty for themselves, but for the insects that are attracted just the same, they pay with their lives.
These glow worms travel across the cave ceiling through mucus tubes, producing threads of sticky silks with beads that dangle in mid air. Then they wait as insects attracted by the light produced on their butts fly up to the ceiling and get entangled - trapped and helpless.
You can go behind the scenes of the dazzling glow worms and how to witness it for yourself by starting here.
BEHIND THE SCiENcE is a series about facts of the world worth knowing, worth sharing.
