Over at Utah, there is a place where the land is so flat you can see the curvature of the Earth. A remnant of the once great ancient Lake Bonneville, it is now the arena where men push the frontier of land speeds.

With its unique surface, speed heads head to the Bonneville Salt Flat to achieve mind boggling speeds!

On 15 October 1997, the first car broke the sound barrier on the salt flats when the Trust Supersonic Car achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h.

The same man that drove the Trust Supersonic Car, Andy Green, is going to attempt to do it again. With a new team and a new car, the Bloodhound Supersonic Car.

This beast is aiming to reach speeds exceeding 1,600km/h and in late 2015, you might be able to see it live as their attempt to also stream it through avenues like youtube.

Their attempt, if successful, would also crown a new salt flat as the fastest speedway on earth, as they take this daredevil feat to Hakskeen Pan in South Africa.

You can go behind the science of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car by starting here.

BEHIND THE SCiENcE is a series about facts of the world worth knowing, worth sharing.
