We haven't widely adopted holograms into our daily lives, but researchers in Japan are already starting to improve upon the next-gen technology.
Devices such as Google Glass and Microsoft's Hololens may give put the possibilities of a computer seamlessly into your view of reality and may even mimic interactions with the projected holograms with gestures, the holograms developed by Japan's Digital Nature Group will take the literally definition of touch.
By agitating the particles in the air using lasers that produces bursts in the femtoseconds (see as 0.000000000000001 second), you can feel the hologram when touching the particles as if it there were a solid presence.
While currently the demonstrated holograms are small, such as a heart and a small fairy, the possibilities are endless!
How would you apply this future technology? I am thinking of an arcade game where you can punch your "enemies" projected as these tangible 3d holograms.
You can go behind the science of the tangible hologram by starting here.
