Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) had just launched a marine education programme that provides primary school students the opportunity to learn more about marine life and its environment through hands-on and other learning activities!
It is awesome to see RWS utilizing their Marine Life Park (MLP), which is currently a world record breaking facility in many aspects, in the hopes of getting these young minds to be interested in this field, or at the very least be aware of it.
Students from Maris Stella High School were lucky enough to be the first to attend such an education session, that involved getting close and feeding rays, and learning about the vibrant underwater world, such as the different classifications of the seahorse.
"A lot of students are aware about general issues concerning pollution, recycling, environmental sustainability. But I think what's lacking still and still needs to be raised is how they can actually contribute - because you know about the situation but don't really know what you can be empowered to do."
The above was a statement by Biswajit Guha, the director of the MLP Education Unit. It is an honest one, and something that MLP is looking to work towards in improving. This programme that they launched will change the directions of some of these young minds that had been through it, and in the future, some of them may be at the forefront in this field and change the world.
There is a famous quote that is appropriate here, one said by Baba Dioum, an environmentalist well-known for the following quotation that comes from his speech in 1968, and it is one that can be found near the exit of MLP.
"In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught."
