What seems to be a traditional statue of Buddha had turned out to be the lasting place of the Buddhist master Liuquan.
Once a monk of the Chinese Meditation school around the year 1,100, Master Liuquan is speculated by believers to have not yet died, but instead achieved an advanced state of meditation possible through Sokushinbutsu, also known as self mummification.
Much has been learned about Master Liuquan through research conducted by the Meander Medical Centre, where staff had examined the 1,000 year old mummy with a CT scan and endoscope.
It has also been discovered that rotten material, paper scraps with ancient Chinese characters have been found in places that would once had been organs.
Master Liuquan and the statue he resides in is currently on display at the Hungarian Natural History Museum and shall be on display until May 2015.
